BBQs, Beaches & Baubles

To ye naysayers… I have heard from many people how disgraceful it is that Memorial Day and Labor Day no longer have any meaning or significance. They have become the bookends of summer. The first and last day for Beaches and BBQs. A day seized by capitalists to acquire some additional baubles (watches included) for their ever growing collection.

I have been brought up to give the benefit of the doubt. I truly believe that people are good and are well meaning. I think that Memorial Day and Labor Day are meant as days of gratitude. The first celebrating the soldiers  who have fought so valiantly so that we can enjoy the freedom that we do and the latter for building this country so that we continue to be the greatest country in the world not just morally and ethically but infrastructurally (not sure if that is a word) and technologically as well.

When celebrations are made with Beaches, BBQs and Baubles I perceive it as a celebration of the ideal of what so many have fought and built not as a desecration to the memory and hard work. What do you think? How should we celebrate? Should the day be set aside for contemplation, self reflection and introspection or should they be celebrated with a beer and a cheer? What does Labor day mean to you?
